Retiring Superintendent Dr. Barry Groves Honored for Vision, Direction and Foresight at Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Mountain View, Calif. (June 23, 2015) – California’s Mountain View Los Altos High School District (MVLA) today became the first high school district in the United States to install intelligent energy storage and electric vehicle charging. The new system was showcased at a ribbon cutting ceremony at Los Altos High School on June 22, 2015 honoring retiring District Superintendent Barry Groves and attended by local educators, businesses and EV drivers. The energy storage system, EV charging and installation was provided without cost to the district by Santa Clara-based Green Charge Networks, the largest provider of commercial energy storage.

“Each year we expect to reduce our demand charges by $86,000 by installing energy storage,” said Mike Mathiesen, Associate Superintendent, Business Services at MVLA. “None of this would have been possible without the vision and direction of Dr. Barry Groves, who in 2013 decided our school district needed to install EV charging stations. Today we are so pleased to honor him as his insight will benefit students, teachers and faculty for years to come.”

Installation of energy storage allows the school district to reduce their peak demand charges which can account for up to 50 percent of their electricity bill. Peak demand charges occur on a monthly basis during the highest 15 minute spike in electricity use. These spikes are usually caused by equipment such as HVAC systems or EV charging stations. The MVLA district has solar canopies that tie into the energy storage system.

“By coupling intelligent energy storage with EV charging stations, the MVLA school district will not only reduce monthly electricity bills but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, help improve the environment, and save money in the process,” said Vic Shao, CEO of Green Charge Networks. “This is our largest customer installation to date with 1.08 MWh. Every dollar saved on energy costs will go directly back to the district.”
